China's Moonshot AI shipped a 2.8-trillion-parameter open model this week, and it's part of a bigger pattern — open-weight models are now volume leaders on inference, not just cheap alternatives. Here's what the closing gap means for how PMs should architect AI dependency.

If your product does high-volume, repetitive inference — classification, extraction, routing, anything that isn't a hard reasoning task — you likely have a workload that's a strong candidate to move off a per-token API and onto self-hosted or dedicated-hosted open weights. The savings compound exactly where they used to hurt most: the highest-volume, most predictable calls.

Reserve frontier closed models for what they're actually better at.
